The Far Path had pushed the habitat back to relay station fourteen-hundred. As the relay station came into view Mia immediately noticed the lack of beam.

“Where's the beam?” she said to Captain Bering.

“I don't know,” he responded.

“Captain, get me Jim on the comm immediately. I'll take the call in my quarters.”

Mia's Annie announced the incoming call.

“Mia, this is Jim.” Mia's second in command.

“Jim where is the beam?”

“We think something happened at thirteen-nine-five while you were looking for that habitat you brought back. They either can't or won't answer our calls. All other intermediate relays have responded.”

“So they've cut off my beam, have they. Well we'll need to do something about that won't we?”

“Right boss.”

Mia had invited Captain Bering along with her senior staff to a conference aboard the Far Path.

“Gentlemen,” she began. “We have a choice to make. We can either wait for instruction from the Corporation which could come at any time or three years from now when we get back an answer to the message I just sent the Board. Or we can come up with a plan ourselves.”

“Mia,” said the Captain. “I take it when you say we can come up with a plan, you mean a plan to get the beam back online?”

“Of course Captain.”

“And that means getting thirteen-nine-five to restore operation of their relay station. If they deliberately cut the beam I for one don't think they will restore it just because we ask nicely.”

“I realize that Captain. If that is the case I won't be asking nicely but emphatically.”

“They might say no. What then?”

“Then we will take the relay station and operate it ourselves.”

“By force?” said a beam engineer.

“If necessary,” said Mia.

“We have no weapons for such an assignment.”

“We have all the weapons we need,” said Mia. “Before me is a room full of the finest engineering minds anywhere. If we can't come up with a plan to get the beam back online, then I doubt anyone can.”
